Life Science Research Professional 1 Xiao Lab (Onsite Work Agreement)

The Xiao Laboratory is a part of the Stanford Biochemistry and Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI). We are a chemical systems biology group focused on developing creative mass spectrometry (MS)-based strategies, combined with data science, to understand mechanisms of metabolic regulation over protein function in health and disease. We aim to use this as a basis to develop translational therapeutics for aging, metabolic disease, and cancer. SCI is one of an elite group of National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and a prominent, dynamic, growing, and complex institute within the Stanford University School of Medicine. You will work with a leading-edge community of faculty and staff on basic science and clinical/translational investigations that are fundamentally changing biomedical science and health care.

We are seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 to perform experiments and data analysis, contribute to publications, and support activities in a newly-established group at Stanford. The successful candidate will perform molecular biology experiments involving genetic and pharmacological interventions in cells, as well as functional assays. The candidate will also have the opportunity to perform animal experiments, proteomics, metabolomics, and computational analyses that interface with ongoing biology efforts in the laboratory. The LSRP1 will work directly with the principal investigator and other members of the lab in a collaborative environment, bringing excellent organizational and communication skills.

Duties


  • Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in the lab and/or the field based on knowledge of scientific theory and interpret results.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research.
  • Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate and post?doctoral individuals.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Contribute to the publication of findings as needed; participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support.
  • Help orient and train new staff or students.
  • Onsite Work Agreement.

Desired Qualifications


  • Expertise in organic or medicinal chemistry.
  • Expertise in bioinformatics and machine learning.
  • Outstanding mammalian cell culture techniques.
  • Experience in basic cellular and molecular biology techniques, including PCR, protein/DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation, imaging, cloning, gene?editing (such as CRISPR), plasmid purification, sequencing, transfection by electroporation, viral transduction, and use of standard software (Image J, BioRad, SnapGene, etc.).


Experience in the following areas is a big plus:

  • Mass spectrometry?based proteomics and metabolomics.
  • Work with mice and perform animal physiology experiments.
  • Field of molecular metabolism.
  • A bachelors degree in biological sciences or related fields is required; candidates with strong research experience are encouraged to apply.

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk?based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctable vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.
