Overview

Police Patrol Officer at Sidney Police Department. NEXT TESTING DATE: February 12, 2026. LOCATION: RICHLAND COUNTY LAW & JUSTICE CENTER, 300 12TH AVE. NW, SIDNEY, MONTANA 59270. Entry-level or lateral transfer candidates are welcome. LATERAL ENTRY STARTS AT $35.25/hr ($73,320.00 annually).

Compensation & Benefits

Wage: $31.75 - $35.25 DOE . Starting (Non-POST Certified) $31.75 , 1-2 years $31.75 , 3-5 years $35.25 , 6-7 years $36.56 , 8-10 years $37.58 , 10 years+ $37.93 .

Shift Differential Pay: $1.00/hr, $1.50/hr, or $2.00/hr depending on the shift. Education Incentives (per month): Associate $50.00 , Bachelor $100.00 , Masters $150.00 . POST Certificate Incentives (per month): Intermediate $50.00 , Advanced $100.00 , Supervisory $125.00 . Other pay includes Specialty Assignment Pay, Longevity Pay, and standard benefits such as vacation and sick leave accrual, holiday pay, medical insurance, retirement system, and provided uniforms and duty gear.

Selection Process

The selection process consists of the following phases:

  • Initial Phase: Montana POST application, Resume
  • Testing Phase: National Police Officer Selection Test, Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT), Oral Board Interview
  • Next Phase: Additional information on remaining phases via the department website

Applicants invited for testing must complete the National Police Officer Selection Test (75-minute written exam with Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Grammar, and Incident Report Writing). A minimum score of 70% is required on the written test. Successful applicants will then take MPAT and an oral board interview. After testing and interviews, scores are reviewed by the selection committee for a conditional offer pending completion of remaining phases. All new hires are subject to a one-year probationary period.

Typical qualifications include outstanding written and verbal communication skills, the ability to react quickly to stressful situations, excellent personal character, a desire to learn, and a willingness to serve.

Minimum Requirements include: U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years old, good driving record and ability to obtain Montana drivers license, ability to obtain POST certification within 12 months of hire, no felony convictions, no misdemeanors within last 5 years, ability to legally possess a firearm, good moral character, high school diploma or GED, ability to work nights/weekends/holidays, computer skills, sound physical and mental health, ability to perform essential functions of the position.
